PTM // Conquering Bunratty Castle!

Entrance to Bunratty Castle

Ahh, Bunratty Castle. The castle was built in 1425 and it had 4 towers consisting of six stories each. It served as a stronghold of the O’briens during the 16th and 17th centuries. The grounds of Bunratty consist of a famous castle, farmhouses, and an over all fairly good sized village. Most of the old shops in the village are actually still in business today. They have a working post office, pub, souvenir store and much more! Bunratty sort of reminded me of Plymouth Plantation back home.

The castle itself had a few demonstrations going on and also lots of history and facts to read along the way. There were a good amount of guided tours going on there as well. My aunt and I sort of skipped by the tour lines and saw it at our own pace, a quick one. I myself don’t need to spend an hour staring at the wall in some of these castle rooms while someone talks about what went on inside of it. I’d rather see everything on my own and be in and out.

After climbing many sets of spiral stairs we finally reached the roof of the castle. The views were unbelievable from the top. Here’s a photo of me at the top of Bunratty Castle!

Across the way from Bunratty Castle is a well known pub called Durty Nelly’s. We stopped by quick to take a few photos. Too bad we didn’t stop in for a few pints!

After Bunratty we had a great dinner in Ennis to finish off the evening and on the way home we stopped by the house that my aunt was born in. Her brother was over the house feeding the sheep one last time calling it a night. We sat by the old traditional Irish fire place and chatted for a bit before heading home.

I’m going to attempt to get a full nights sleep tonight so that I’ll have plenty of energy for the Cliffs of Moher tomorrow. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the Cliffs of Moher for a long time now so it should be really cool!

Til’ next time…
