Deborah,

I know, I almost couldn't believe it myself! Liz's vaccinations were also covered 100%. We both had Harvard Pilgrim Health Insurance. I hear you! It's amazing how expensive these shots can be. It's nice to know that we are fully vaccinated and the money that could have went to those shots will now fund our travels in SE Asia for 2, 3, maybe 4 months. LOL!

I can't believe your insurance covered all of your vaccinations - that is amazing. Mine covers...none. (Hey, who needs preventative medicine?) And when I went to the doc, the initial projected bill for everything recommended was $1,400!! So we're taking a risk on not getting the $660 rabies series, but shelling out the big bucks ($440) for Japanese encephalitis. Oof. Hurts more than the shots!

Hey there! I followed your link from another travel blog and just wanted to say hi! My husband and I did an 18 month round-the-world trip in 2005/06 and it was the best decision we've ever made. Since returning home (we live in Cape Cod now), we continue to travel internationally several times a year (and hope to do another rtw at some stage again). The travel bug is one thing we never want to vaccinate against! :)

Congrats on getting such a great head start on your vaccinations. And that's wonderful that your health insurance covered them all! Sad to say we weren't nearly so lucky, but the cost was well worth the protection. No one wants polio! Or rabies, or yellow fever, etc, etc! Oi!

For our anti-malarial pills we opted for doxycycline - it was the best choice for us given the amount of time we'd be in malarial areas and the particular areas we were traveling to. It was also very inexpensive to purchase in the US (yeah!) and easily found abroad, so that was another plus for us too. Sun sensitivity is one of the more common side effects of doxy, but luckily that never affected us.

It's always interesting to hear what other travelers choose for their meds, but the most important thing is to do what works best for you and your travels. It sounds like malarone will be a great fit for you guys! (Also Cipro is full of win and awesome. Other than our passports and our ATM cards, it's probably the most important thing we bring with us!)

Best of luck in your travels! I'm looking forward to reading along. :)
