Behind the Photo: “The Smoking Swan”

During our stay at Penguin Village in Dahab, Egypt we had a man who slept on the tile floor about 10 feet from our door. Each morning we would wake up, open our door, and walk by him as he slept in open air. Each time we would walk by he would greet us with hellos and good mornings. He wasn’t just some homeless guy sleeping on the floor of the hotel, he was the guy that cleaned our room when we went out in the morning.
One afternoon we headed back to our room to take a shower and upon entering the room we noticed something a little different about our bed. Our cleaner had twisted up our towels into a cool looking swan. You know, something like you would see on a cruise ship? The only difference is that he added an Egyptian twist to it by sticking a cigarette in it’s mouth. He also added my scarf and Liz’s sun hat to the mix in order to create this masterpiece. Oh, let’s not forget about the flowers that he hand picked before spreading them all over the bed. What a guy!
