5 Free Things to Do in Madrid
Tweet
Well, accommodation in Madrid is one thing you surely won’t find for free (unless you CouchSurf!) but there are plenty of other great things to do for free in Madrid. They say “The best things in life are free”, right? Well, here are 5 things you can do in Madrid for absolutely FREE.
1. Free Museums
As the capital of Spain and one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, Madrid hosts several of the most outstanding museums in Europe. Among them the Museo Reina Sofia and the Museo del Prado. The Reina Sofia has periods in which the entrance is free every day! Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7pm until 9pm. Saturday afternoons starting at 2.30pm and Sunday mornings until 2.30pm. Tuesday it is closed. The free entrance times for the Prado Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm until 8pm and 5pm until 8pm on Sundays.
2. Parque de Buen Retiro
Literally translated the “Park of Good Rest” this is one of the most beautiful parks in the city and one of the main attractions of Madrid. It is located in the city center and serves as a wonderful, tranquil oasis to the hassles of a big city, because it is full of beautiful sculptures and monuments, a lake and also art galleries. In addition numerous events are held in the park throughout the year.
3. El Tigre
It wouldn’t be entirely true to talk about this bar and say everything is for free. (But imagine how nice that would be!), but at this bar the drinks are very affordable and along with the drinks you order you get free tapas. It’s a very authentic place and it is always crowded. You have to try the cider which is the bar’s speciality. The address is: Calle Infantas 30, Madrid 28004.
4. El Rastro Flea Market
Every Sunday from 9 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon there is a flea market. This is the perfect place to buy some one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts to bring back home. You can find this market in the area of Ronda de Toledo in the district La Latina, one of the oldest districts in Madrid with a very Bohemian flair.
5. Puerta del Sol
One might argue if “people watching” is a legitimate activity, but I find it highly interesting and entertaining. Puerta del Sol is the central spot in Madrid. You will be able to enjoy and see different street artist and at night the plaza is illuminated by the many neon signs from the buildings around. If you are an urban trend hunter this is the perfect place to spot some new trends.
This is only a small selection of FREE things you can do in Madrid. If you’re planning a trip here soon, be sure to look into Madrid accommodation ahead of time and then be sure to go through this list of FREE things to do!
Thanks for your tips. I am visiting madrid next summer and I will bring this page with me. :)
