Getting a Taste of an African Gem: Tanzania

Tanzania

Dreary, jet-lagged and exhausted, I stepped off the plane excited for my first African adventure. I couldn’t believe after all of the planning and research that my friends and I were finally there. When they first asked me to join them on their two-week trip, I was a little weary about their choice of destination. I kept thinking, “Why are they so keen to go to Tanzania?”

But after doing my homework and going on the trip, I realized Tanzania is the prime African getaway. We found MyDestination.com/Tanzania a great help with our research and tips!

Situated in Central Africa on the East Coast, Tanzania has all of the highlights of Africa in one country. Breath-taking beaches, “The Lion King” safaris, tribal cultures and untouched wildlife make up this fantastic country. Despite tribal rivalries, political unrest and Western influences, Tanzania’s wildlife and tourist attractions have remained relatively untouched.

We wanted to see it all. We couldn’t miss out on a safari (stereotypically the African experience) or the relaxation the beaches would offer us. So we decided to focus on the vast Serengeti National Park and the white sand beaches of Zanzibar.

Tip: The best time of year to visit the Serengeti for a safari is January to February.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s largest and most famous park. Rumor has it that it inspired “The Lion King,” and I completely agree with that statement – pictures really don’t do the landscape justice. The terrain changes from rolling hills to grassy savannas to a few lakes in between. You really never know what animal (or insect!) you’re going to discover at any time. I definitely recommend going on an organized safari, and even for the budgeting traveler like myself, there’s something in every price range. Once we kind of knew where we were going, we decided to get a little bit more adventurous and drive in with our own rented vehicle. But wild animals don’t abide traffic signs as we got stuck behind grazing gazelles for a little bit more than an hour! We really took the time to take Serengeti in but there was just so much to see…

Fact: Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa (est. 5895 m or 19,340 ft). Visitors from around the world travel to Tanzania to climb to the summit of this giant mountain.

Zanzibar

After the excitement of Serengeti, we couldn’t wait for the relaxing beaches of Zanzibar. It’s no wonder why Zanzibar is one of the most visited cities of Tanzania. The beaches are beyond breath taking and the city itself is even better. We spent a lot of time in Stone Town, with its windy cobble stone streets and the smell of spices emerging from the on looking stores. There are many beachfront guesthouses to stay in for cheap prices. It’s beyond worth it in my opinion because you get a little taste of how these people live.

No matter where you are going, take my advice: insect repellent is your best friend. I’ve never had so many mosquito bites or seen so many giant cockroaches in my entire life!

  1. Seems amazing, I would love to visit Tanzania one day, I’ve never been on a safari and that seems like a great place to do it.
