End of Summer Road Trip Part 1 – Lambertville, New Jersey
TweetIt’s Friday night around 7:30PM. I’m usually just getting home from the gym and starting my weekend with Liz around this time. Not this weekend though, I’ve got some serious plans for one of the last few weekends of summer. I’m headed south to Jackson, New Jersey with my friend Billy to tear it up at Six Flags Great Adventure.
Both Billy and I are roller coaster enthusiasts. To be honest, I love roller coasters but I could hardly keep up with him when we visited Six Flags New England a few weeks ago. He’s a die hard roller coaster junkie armed with one prized possesion, his Six Flags Season Pass. If there’s anyone on earth that really gets their money’s worth on a season pass to Six Flags, it’s Billy.
Billy and I jump into my car and we begin our 287 mile journey south to a town called Lambertville, New Jersey. Tonight we’ll be staying with my friend Aubrey who I originally met in a met in a hostel in Naples, Italy back in 2008.
A little over five and a half hours later, with a couple pit stops in between we finally arrived at Aubrey’s. By the time we got there my eyes were itchy and I was completely exhausted. Although I knew I needed sleep in the worst way, I also was reuniting with a friend I hadn’t seen in over two years! After Aubrey and I originally met in Naples, we ran into each other in Dubrovnik, Croatia a few weeks later, and then once again back home in Massachusetts. You have no clue how small this world really is until you get out there and explore it!
Aubrey invited us into her little old studio apartment which was on the second floor of Robins Egg, a really cool art gallery in Lambertville, NJ.
We dropped our bags and chatted for a while before tossing our shoes back on and heading down the street to check out the Delaware River. Aubrey wanted to show us how flooded the river was these days after Hurricane Irene came through about a week or two ago. It was a pretty amazing sight. We crossed the bridge from Lamberville, NJ to New Hope, PA on foot. We were pumped to be able to say we “walked to Pennsylvania” even though it was literally a 5 minute walk from where Aubrey lives in Lambertville. Still cool though, right!?
After walking back into New Jersey we headed back to Aubrey’s place to catch up on some much needed sleep. We had a long day ahead of us, a long day full of brain rattling roller coasters. We had absolutely no idea what we were in for…
Saturday Morning we woke up around 9AM and Aubrey was headed to work. She tossed us a set of keys and told us we could make ourselves at home. I did just that. I cooked up two eggs and boiled a pot of tea while Billy jumped in the shower. Once he was finished we decided to take a short walk through Lambertville just so that we could experience some of what this small, colorful town had to offer.
We also wanted to see what the Delaware River looked like in daylight, so we headed that way…
We arrived at the Delaware River to find that the water level had dipped a little bit since we were there the night before. We decided to once again make the walk from Lambertville, NJ to New Hope, PA. so that we could take a photo of the Welcome to Pennsylvania sign on the other side of the bridge.
After a short walk through town we headed back to the apartment, packed up our bags and jumped in the car. Next stop… Six Flags Great Adventure!
