British Columbia
When a single province is four times larger than the whole country you’re from, it can seem a little daunting to know where to go and what to do there, especially when you’re on a tight budget. But it doesn’t matter where you choose for your trip to British Columbia, it definitely won’t disappoint.
The largest city in BC is one of the most perfectly situated in the world. With the Pacific Ocean glittering along its coastline, stunning mountains cradling it to the east and in the middle, a vibrant manmade architectural cluster, bustling with people and culture.
Sitting on the western coast of Canada, Vancouver also has the perfect climate. There are pleasant springs filled with candy coloured blossom, warm summers of lush green grass lining the beautiful parks, red and gold leaves fluttering in the crisp autumn air, and the shimmering ski slopes only a short drive away in winter. Whichever season you pick BC has plenty to offer.
The Lookout
Where ever I go in the world I always want to see it from above. So as I sat munching breakfast in a cute little cafe in Gastown I knew exactly where I was heading first; The Lookout. An attraction that does exactly what it says on the tin, this sky scraping tower has the best view in town and doesn’t cost the earth. Riding the shiny glass elevator is just as much fun as getting out and witnessing the stunning 360 degree views from the top.

Grouse Mountain
The second ‘high point’ for me, if you’ll pardon the pun, was Grouse Mountain. 25 minutes from downtown, Grouse Mountain majestically watches over the city like a mother hen. The hike to the top has been described rather aptly as Mother Nature’s Stairmaster, so if you’re not feeling too energetic then just jump in the handy 100 passenger tram and enjoy the ride.
Whistler
But the vastness and beauty of BC can’t be truly captured until you’ve ventured further. If you’re lacking time and money as I was, then one excellent option is Whistler. In winter this incredible resort is one of the best ski locations in the world, but don’t let that reputation fool you, Whistler is a year round destination.
One of my favourite activities was the ziptrek. Zooming over the treetops on a zipline, looking down at the forest valley below really took my breath. And there are so many hikes, bike trails, golf courses and whole host of sporting activities to be experienced that the more active can be happily occupied for days. But if you’re more the sitting down and chilling out type, then why not sit back and take a scenic flight instead, not too cheap I’m afraid but it’ll be a memory that lasts a lifetime.
