Eating Like Kings and Queens at Lekgotla
TweetAfter a quick shower, the five of us met at the elevators and made our way through the largest mall on the entire continent of Africa. Coincidentally, this mall happens to be connected to our hotel. Yet another reason why the Intercontinental Johannesburg is one of the best places to stay in the area.
Nelson Mandela Square
We were all exhausted from the long flight, yet we had all the energy in the world to hit up Nelson Mandela Square for our first official meal in South Africa.
Fact: The statue of Nelson Mandela shown in the photo above is just under 20 feet tall and weighs in at 2.5 tons!
Welcome to Lekgotla
Lekgotla means “meeting place” in Tswana. This restaurant offers cuisines from all four corners of Africa. As soon as we walked in the staff approached us wanting to take photos with us.
After shooting some photos of the restaurant, we headed towards our table which happened to be conveniently situated about fifteen feet from a stage with a live band putting on a show for the patrons. The live music playing in the background was a great addition to the already impressive ambience and atmosphere of Lekgotla.
Admittedly, there’s nothing I love more than listening to live music. Especially when it’s just steps away as I chow down on a delicious meal.
Starters
- Senegalese Calamari – Crispy fried calamari served with peanut, lemon and chili sauce
- Mini Sosatie Braai – A trio of lamb, chicken, and beef sosaties served on hot coals w/ dipping sauces
- Crocodile Carpaccio – Thin slivers of crocodile served with mango chutney, chermoula, and tomato jam
- Ethiopian Naan Bread - Plain and Garlic Naan w/ garlic, sesame, olive paste, chili and feta
Entree:
Kenyan Baby Chicken - Marinated in lemon and garlic, brushed with a peri-peri sauce.
Overall I thought the baby chicken was really tasty. The peri-peri sauce was excellent although it might not be for you if you’re not into spicy sauces/marinades. My mouth was sizzling after my meal. I highly recommend the Kenyan Baby Chicken but I’ll let you make the call.
Cheers!
After dinner we celebrated our first night in South Africa with a round of Springbok shots…

Yeah, you have to give it a shot! I thought it tasted sort of like ham in a way, but the others didn’t agree. It’s one of those things you just have to dive into without thinking of what you’re actually eating. Haha!
That menu is out of control. Can only imagine the awesome flavors. Have an extra slice of croc for us!
