3 Unique Museums in Johannesburg, South Africa

Did you miss: Eating like Kings and Queens at Lekgotla. If so, be sure to check it out!

Good Morning World!

Greetings from Johannesburg!

After an incredible dinner at Lekgotla, we headed back to our rooms and attempted to catch up on some much needed sleep. Although, that’s easier said than done considering your body is still on Eastern Standard Time.

The following morning started off with a scrumptious buffet style breakfast at our hotel (Intercontinental Johannesburg).

Our first of three stops on our museum packed day was a place called the Origins Centre.

Origins Centre

Origins Centre - Johannesburg

The Origins Centre is home to the largest collection of rock art in the world. If you’re into geology, then this museum is for you.

The museum takes visitors on a journey back in time. The journey begins with the origins of human kind and all the way up to the development of art and symbolism in the modern world.

The skull shown in the photo above dates back to about 3.2 million years ago. Imagine 3.2 million years?

Personally, I’m not too crazy about geology or ancient rocks but I’m passionate about art so my favorite part of the museum happened to be this little room with African art on display.

Museum Africa

Museum Africa hosts a large collection of objects, paintings, rocks, and photographs from 1935 to current times.

The displays show life in Johannesburg and it’s place in South Africa’s complex history. The themes include work as a gold miner, shanty houses and township jazz.

Apartheid

Apartheid Museum Johannesburg, South Africa

Apartheid was an elaborate system of legal segregation and discrimination based on the grounds of race. This horrendous system controlled the republic of South Africa from 1948 to 1993.

The story behind Apartheid is far too complex to explain in a single blog post so I’m going to forward you over to the official website so that you can read more about it.

  1. Very interesting! I’ve read quite a bit about Apartheid times in South Africa. That’s great you got to visit the museum there.
Adam recently posted..Why I wanted to visit Petra a second time

    • Yeah, it was certainly interesting! I left there informed but feeling quite horrible about all of the suffering that went on during Apartheid.
