Descending Into the Dark and Eerie Sterkfontein Caves

Sterkfontein Caves Johannesburg

Sterkfontein Caves

Welcome to the Sterkfontein Caves, located about 10KM from Maropeng and The Cradle of Humankind.

These caves are home to the oldest and most continuous paleaontological dig on Earth. It’s also home to Little Foot, a complete fossil skeleton discovered in the Sterkfontein Caves between 1994-1998. The fossil itself dates back to between 2.3 and 4.17 million years old.

We spent about an hour traversing through these incredibly dark and cool caves. Along the way our guide pointed out several unique characteristics of the Sterkfontein Caves as well as the location of where the skeleton of Little Foot was actually found. Interesting!

Note: There were several times during the tour where we had to crawl through very miniscule tunnels so if you’re a little too tall or too round, you might want to skip out on this one.
