Better Than Sex is a full service dessert only restaurant with a dark loungey vibe. It’s a chocolate lovers wet dream, a dieter’s worst nightmare and foodie’s will be sure to find this place nothing less than orgasmic. If you’re a diabetic, stay far away from Better Than Sex because it’s guaranteed to send you into diabetic shock!

After a long day of fun in the sun in Key West, it was time for us to wind down and slip into something a little more comfy.

We had just finished up a delicious dinner over at Santiago’s Bodega when we stumbled upon some soothing live music coming from inside of this dark little place on Petronia Street. We glance up to catch the name and it reads “Better Than Sex”. Hmm.

We’re instantly intrigued by the ambiance of the place. The music, the name, and the fact that it was jam packed on a Thursday night were sure signs that this was the place to be.

It’s late, but we peek inside the door to see if we can get a closer look at what really goes down in this place. We’re immediately greeted by the hostess who explains that they are full and unfortunately we would not be able to get a seat tonight. We tell her that it’s no problem in a mumbling tone of voice as we turn away. It’s obvious that we’re disappointed. The hostess then perks up saying that they have a reservation for two in the corner but the people have yet to show up and it’s 15 minutes past the reservation time. Now we’re talking!

About five minutes passed before our names are called and we’ve got ourselves a seat in the hottest dessert joint in town. Yes!

The Experience

Our waitress, Kelly, introduces herself and has us giggling right from the get go. She starts by telling us a little bit about the restaurant, it’s accolades, and how everything on the menu is house made and freshly baked each morning. Impressive!

Kelly begins to recommend some of her favorite drinks on the menu, one of which is her own signature drink called “Kelly’s Klimax“. She explains that its a Sparkling Red Dolce’ Stilnovo Moscato in a White Chocolate Rimmed Champagne Flute. “No pun intended, but the white chocolate oozes down the back of your throat so smoothly”, she says.

“We have other drinks if the Kelly’s Klimax doesn’t do the trick for you. Take a look at the drinks listed under “Rim Jobs”, says Kelly.

How about the Caramel “Over Me”, Emily’s Entry, or the mouthwatering Matty’s Money Shot?

At this point we’re laughing out loud as we decline her offer. Unfortunately, we’re just not in the mood for drinks as it’s getting late and we have to be up early the next morning.

“Okay, no problem! I’ll be right back with your water. Moan if you need me!“, says Kelly.

Although we decide to skip on the drinks tonight, we end up getting down and dirty with the desserts as you’ll see below.

Think warm, freshly backed chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven wrapped in a flaky pie crust. Chocolate pieces, pecans and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream drizzled in chocolate and caramel sauce. YUM!

I absolutely loved this dessert! Yes, it was as rich as it looks. If you’re a cookie lover, you’ll fall in love with this dessert at first sight.

A towering slice of homemade Red Velvet cheesecake drizzled in chocolate and topped fresh whipped cream along with a slice of strawberry on the side.

Liz is a red velvet lover so she really enjoyed her Between The Red Velvet Sheets Cheesecake. She did say she thought it was just a little too much after having dinner just 30 minutes prior to arriving at Better Than Sex. I, on the other hand had no issue with helping her clean her plate!

Conclusion:

While Better Than Sex was quite pricey when it comes to desserts, you have to remember that literally everything on the menu is homemade and freshly baked each and every morning. Everything except the ice cream that is. Also, you’re not only paying for the desserts but you’re also paying for the atmosphere. From the quiet acoustic set going on in the corner to the romantic candle-lit tables, there’s no other place like this in Key West.

Sure, we ended up spending thirty something dollars when all was said and done but we had a great time. That’s what life is all about, right?
