Green Harbor: the Hidden Gem of Massachusetts

Marshfield, Massachusetts

The Beautiful Village of Green Harbor

We are all well aware of the more famous and frequented destinations throughout Massachusetts, for which there are many. From the lovely sandy beaches of the Cape, up to the historically beautiful Rockport, this state sports some of the most amazing seaside destinations around. There are, however, a few destinations that one could easily overlook. The beautiful and historic Green Harbor is just such a place. Nestled in the cozy town of Marshfield on the South Shore it is truly worthy of the title “hidden gem”.

Located just 45 minutes or so south of Boston this historic seaside harbor sports some of the best beaches, a nostalgic old fashioned General Store, some incredibly fresh seafood and all of this is in walking distance of each other!

Mouthwatering Seafood here!

Green Harbor Lobster Pound Just a short stroll down Beach Street is the long time local favorite, the Green Harbor Lobster Pound. For well over 50 years this right off the harbor inlet destination has been supplying fresh, no frills, off the boat seafood. Another few steps down the road and around the corner on Marginal street is the green harbor General Store or the “genny”. This historic general store stocks all the last minute items, and a penny candy table that competes with the best of them!

Burke’s Beach, Breathtaking Views, and more

For a day of fun in the sun “Burkes” beach which is located on the corner of Beach St and Bay Ave sports one of the most pristine oceanside spots to be found anywhere in the state. Buffeted by the gorgeous harbor on one left, and the breathtaking peninsula on the right looking out to the historic Plymouth “Gurnet” Lighthouse, it is truly a wonder to behold.

If you’re looking for a quiet weekend getaway this summer, Green Harbor will not disappoint. With many rentable summer homes, this often overlooked destination is both convenient, affordable and easily rivals some of the top oceanfront destinations in Massachusetts.

  1. That lead image is stunning!
Great article as well. Green Harbor reminds me a lot of Two Lights State Park in Maine about 15 min from the house I grew up in.
    Quality post.
