Pacific Coast Bike Tour Day 11: Newport to Florence

Don’t miss: Pacific Coast Bike Tour Day 10: Lincoln City to Newport

This morning we had a late start but it ended up turning out really well. Will was having some issues with his tires and needed to head back into town so I followed him back over the bridge into Newport and I stopped off at Starbucks.

Starbucks in Newport, OR

Will pedaled on a few streets down to Bike 101 which is supposedly one of the best bike shops in America interestingly enough. After some closer inspection, the fibers in Will’s cheap tires were starting to break down and cause the tube to twist and produce bulges in the tire. He ended up getting two brand new kevlar based tires for $50 and he was on his way.

We hopped on our bikes and headed south down the 101 to our first real stop of the day. This is a shot from a random beach along the beautiful coast of Oregon.

The Beautiful Coast of Oregon

We cruised the along the edge of the coast the entire day while the sun shined down on us and the tail wind pushed us from behind.

Cruising along the Oregon Coastline

Our next stop along the coast was at this random house that had these interesting wood carved statues out front. We pulled over, approached the owner and asked him if we could take some photos with his carvings.

After cruising along the coast line with tailwinds I decided that today was the best day of the tour so far. The scenery, the weather, and the tailwind pushing us around the windy coastline roads made for the perfect day on tour.

We stopped for lunch at Muriel O. Ponsler Memorial Wayside where we made some tuna sandwiches while taking in the views.

After lunch we cruised down a really long downhill with no cars in sight. We hit about 35 MPH at one point and it’s safe to say at this point that burning down the back sides of these big hills are quickly becoming our favorite parts of the journey.

Cruising to Florence, OR

Just before we entered Florence we encountered our second tunnel of the trip. Once we popped out of the other side we stopped at one last view point before rolling into camp for the night at Jessie M Honeyman State Park.

Riding to Florence, OR

Tomorrow we plan on cruising from Florence to Sunset Bay State Park in Coos Bay, OR.

Today’s Mileage: 58 mi
