Nicaragua, here we come!

Nicaraguan Flag

Off to Nicaragua we go!

As you may or may not have heard, Rob and I are headed to Nicaragua tomorrow! This trip was an absolute last minute “screw it, let’s just book something” type of scenario after finishing up a “we gotta go somewhere” Skype call just about two weeks ago.

Both Rob and I have been talking about traveling to Central/South America for a while now. Neither of us have any previous experience traveling there so it should be interesting to say the least. I feel as if I’ve read enough forums now to know what the typical scams are, how the taxi robberies work, why you should try your best to keep your camera under wraps while walking around some cities in Nicaragua and pretty much Central America as a whole.

I’m at the point where I’ve read so much negative things about the country that it’s time to just get there and experience things for myself.

Tip: Do yourself a favor and always research the common scams of a particular country before heading there, but STOP right there. If you dig deeper and read into every little detail of someones horrible trip report, it will totally turn you off of your trip.

Don’t let this happen to you! Nine times out of ten, you get to the country that you’ve heard all these negative things about and your trip goes perfectly without any issues. All you need to do is be conscious of things that seem to happen regularly, other than that it’s time to ENJOY YOURSELF!

What will we be doing in Nicaragua?

So, I’m sure you’re wondering what Rob and I will be getting into in Nicaragua right? Well, funny enough, we know just as much as you do. As a matter of fact, we haven’t planned a thing! Nope, we have no accommodations booked, no adventure activities scheduled (although we have some in mind), and at this point no idea how we will make our way around the country as of yet. I’ve been on more than a few spontaneous “show up and figure it out” types of trips in my day but none as impromptu as this one. As I stated above, it should be interesting to say the least. We’re really looking forward to seeing what Nicaragua has to offer…

Places we want to visit along the way…

  • Granada (our first stop… we think?)
  • León
  • San Juan Del Sur
  • Ometepe

How long will we be in Nicaragua?

Again, we have no idea at this point but I just booked a flight (JetBlue) home a few days ago and I’ll be flying from Liberia, Costa Rica to Boston on the 15th of December. All I need to worry about is getting myself to Liberia before the 15th, which should be no big deal. Rob is actually heading to Nicaragua on a one-way ticket as he plans to continue South and eventually into South America? At least I assume so.

Let’s do this!

Well that about wraps it up, almost time to hit the road! It’s been such a great year so far and I’m really looking forward to finishing it off with a visit to my 23rd and 24th country within the last 3 years. Not only that, but I’m excited to travel with a good friend of mine and fellow travel blogger Rob from Stop Having  a Boring Life. Be sure to check him out!

  1. Very jealous right now, I can’t wait to get through Central America. We definitely need to plan something down the road where the 3 of us go on an adventure and film everything… Until then, all the best on the trip guys!

    • Well that my friend sounds like an incredible idea! We’ll run into each other one of these days… I’m sure of it. We should set something up for early next year. Keep in touch!

  2. This is going to be fun!

  3. Ahhh so damn jealous… 8 months in my trip Nicaragua is still my favorite country so far. When you are in Granada or Leon be sure to go to the markets to eat breakfast & lunch. It’s so damn good and you will be eating along side locals and it’s so cheap. When you are in Leon be sure to go Volcano Boarding just be sure you break with BOTH FEET to not kill yourself like I almost did. I skipped SJdelS because everyone says its a tourist trap. Spend more time in Ometepe, rent a motor bike and circle the island. Okay I can keep going, but I wont… let me know if you got any ???. Enjoy it…

  4. You will LOVE Nicaragua!!!!!!!!!! I went there on a solo trip and besides having some issues while driving my car and shady cops I never had one problem. San Juan del Sur is Paradise.
