A visit to Koh Lanta wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Lanta Animal Welfare, an incredible facility that helps to control the overpopulation of stray cats and dogs on the island of Koh Lanta through sterilization.
As stated above, many of the animals at LAW are strays, although, some are simply abandoned and left on the side of the road. Even worse, some are tortured by locals who are fed up with them hanging around their homes, hotels or restaurants.
Watch the short video below to learn more about Lanta Animal.
During our visit we heard more than our fair share of horror stories when it came to the overall treatment of animals on the island.
One story that has been stuck in our minds to this day is the one of a dog named Sky who had burning hot oil poured all over her body in attempt to kill her
Imagine. Just imagine someone trying to burn you to death. A long, slow, and extremely painful death. The questions of who, what, why and WTF immediately came to our minds. Who does this type of sh*t!?
On to something a little more positive and enjoyable, here are some of our favorite photos from our short time spent at LAW.
Walk the Dogs!
If there is one thing we would recommend most when it comes to visiting Lanta Animal Welfare, it would be to ask to take the dogs for a walk.
LAW is run by a few volunteers who always seem to need a hand when it comes to walking the dogs. In fact, people show up on Lanta Animal Welfare’s doorstep each day in hopes to be able to take a dog or two down to the beach.
After stopping into LAW for the first time to check out the facilities, we knew we would have to come back and spend some time taking a couple of dogs down to the beach to play.
We were fortunate enough to get to hang with two really cute dogs for the day.
Meet “Mama” and “Spot”!
All it took was a “wanna go to the beach?” and all of a sudden we were being dragged behind Mama and Spot who seemed to know exactly where the beach was located.
Now we understand why they were in such a rush to get here. I mean, just look at this place!
Heading back to LAW wasn’t really an option once it was time to go. Mama and Spot knew what our plans were and they were having absolutely none of it!
Spot purposely collapsed into a lying position on the sand approximately every five feet or so. She was basically telling me there was no way in the world that she was going back home. Uh-uh. No way!
If you can believe it, I had to pick up Spot and carry her home like a baby. What a cutie! A heavy cutie, that is.
By the time we had reached Lanta Animal Welfare, we were exhausted. Between the boiling hot sun and the dogs dragging us around, it was time for us to get some much needed rest. That being said, we didn’t leave without an attachment. We miss Mama and Spot!
If you’re in Koh Lanta, do us a favor and stop in to see if Mama and Spot need to be walked (if they haven’t been adopted yet). If they are there, tell them we say Hi!
